Malt Whiskey Passport

Every time you purchase a malt-whisky (for your own consumption) in the bar of the Best Western Appleby Manor Hotel, present your passport for an official stamp. Collect twenty-five different stamps and receive five FREE measures (each of which qualifies for another stamp). Collect a total of fifty different stamps and Appleby Manor will present you with a bottle of the single-malt of your choice! (Subject to availability, maximum age 12 years).

The Malts
Your Malt Whisky Passport details every Scottish malt whisky which is or has been in recent years distilled. They are the product of roughly 118 distilleries (although some have been closed-down and dismantled). As a general taste guide, the malts are grouped by region:

Lowland Malts are dry and light with less characteristics than their counterparts from further north. Almost all the production is used for blending.

Islay Malts are the most distinctive, receiving their weighty, smoky and pungent flavour from the Islay-peat fires used to dry the malt.

Campbeltown produces just three malts from two distilleries, although once-upon-a-time it had over thirty! Each is different.

Highland Malts are sweeter and full-bodied with many subtle flavours and a rich mellowness.

Speyside Malts are sweeter still, less full-bodied but richer and more complex.

The only way to class the malts is to try them. You'll find as many differences in flavour as there are in the wines of France, yet there is no official classification of quality. So experiment and enjoy yourself!

Key to Malts
