The Pennines

Appleby Manor Country House Hotel is nestled amongst the rolling Pennine Hills, a few miles North lies England's largest 'area of outstanding natural beauty' - the High Pennines.

The North Pennines was designated as an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1988.  It is the second largest AONB at almost 2000 square kilometers of unspoilt and undiscovered countryside, with miles of quiet paths to walk and explore.

Whilst staying at Appleby Manor Country House Hotel there are plenty of places to explore in the Pennines and the area is rich in history, wildlife and culture.  It is also unrivalled countryside for walking, cycling and watching the wildlife in its natural habitat.

North of Appleby, sample some of the many organic treats available at the Village Bakery, in Malmerby. Famous throughout Britain for its highest quality, locally produced, organic food.  There is a shop and also an exhibition.  Continue on to Hartside Viewpoint which is high on the Pennines fringes overlooking the Vale of Eden.  It is a stunning vantage point where you can see the spectacular Lake District fells beyond.  Continuing explore Alston, England's highest market town, with quaint cobbled streets and interesting shops and galleries.  Continue on to the splendour of Hadrian's Wall, before returning via the delightful Teesdale and High Force waterfall reputed to be England's largest waterfall plunges over the Whin Sill to a deep pool 69 ft below.

Walking Holidays & The Pennine Way
The Pennines is a great place for days out walking or walking breaks and holidays.   The Pennines provides challenging long distance routes such as the Pennine Way, and Appleby Manor Country House Hotel is located a short distance off the route of the Pennine Way and provides comfortable hotel accommodation after a long days walking.  Whether you are undertaking a small part or the whole of the Pennine Way the scenery en-route is beautiful.  The Pennine Way has something to offer every walker.  It is a 270-mile walk that will take you from the Peak District National Park along the Pennine ridge through the Yorkshire Dales, up into Northumberland, across the Cheviots, setting you down in the Scottish Borders.

Alternatively there are more gentle riverside rambles, or walks through the dales and open fells.  There are programmes of guided walks organised throughout the local area and Appleby Manor Hotel can assist you in putting you in touch with various companies, or you can contact the local Tourist Information Centre.

Following a hard days walking retreat back to the comfortable surrounding of Appleby Manor Hotel.  The hotel's leisure facilities of plunge pool, sauna and steam room will help to ease the muscles or enjoy a drink in the relaxing lounge or bar, followed by delicious food in our award winning restaurant.
