Lake District Famous Figures

The area surrounding Appleby Manor Country House Hotel has long been associated with some very famous figures whose footsteps you can follow.

William Wordsworth was born and lived in the Lake District and you can visit his homes such as Dove cottage, Wordsworth House and Rydal Mount.  You can also visit his grave in Grasmere.  There are also many places in and around the Lake District made famous by his writing such as the area around Ullswater which is reputed to have been the inspiration for his poem about the daffodils.   

Beatrix Potter famous for her childrens' books about legendary characters such as Peter Rabbit and Jemima Puddleduck also made her home in the Lake District at Hilltop, where she penned many of her famous stories. 

You can also visit Brantwood on the eastern shore of Coniston Water which was home to the art critic, writer and philosopher, John Ruskin. He came to the Lake District in 1824, he had a significant impact on Victorian society with writings which covered economics, politics and art.

Arthur Ransome spent his childhood summers near Coniston Water and later wrote Swallows and Amazons in 1930.  He moved to the area in later life and is buried at Rusland Church.

John Cunliffe, creator of Postman Pat, lived and taught in the area.  He set the Postman Pat books in Kendal and the remote valley of Longsleddale. 

Stan Laurel from the famous duo Laurel and Hardy was born in Ulverston. 

Katherine Parr (1512-1548) born in Kendal, she was the sixth wife of Henry VIII and the only one to survive him.
